7/26/07 I finally got to New York City to see the Poiret exhibit this week, and also was able to see some old friends. A great trip. The exhibit was almost anti-climactic for me, as I'd looked so much at the exhibition catalogue before I went there. I did love seeing the clothes up close, though, they look so lovingly handmade, and are so original and so modern looking, though they were made almost a century ago. Probably my favorite parts of the exhibit were the amazing stage-set-like backgrounds, and also there are two videos of the construction of a couple of the garments. These two garments are cut in the simplest way imaginable, then draped to form chic and flattering garments.(Here is a video of the garment construction: Click here.) There is a terrific video tour of the exhibition, by the way, click here now. Opens a new browser window or tab, close to return to my website. Also of great interest to me were the many lovely scarves available in the Metropolitan Museum of Art shop. It gives me great confidence to see that there was nothing there at all like the scarves I make and sell, and when I came home and saw my first nearly completed Poiret shawl, I felt it was in no way inferior from anything I'd seen in New York. So I feel quite inspired. |
